Sleep is the most important part of our life cycle. According to nature humans should set aside approx. 1/3 part of the day(24hour) for the sleep.

SLEEP CYCLE- It is divided into four stages 1-Non-Rem stage N1-falling asleep 2-Non-Rem stage N2-Light sleep 3-Non-Rem stage N3-SW slow wave or deep-sleep. 4-REM (Rapid Eye Movement stage)-stage R. .Stage1-N1-it is a stage of yawning. It lasts for 5-150 minutes when we start falling asleep. We take 2,3 or multiple yawns and then fall asleep. Heartbeat and breathing slow down Muscles begin to relax. But this phase of the sleep is very slight. One can awake easily at any disturbance. Sage2-N-2– In this stage, eye movement becomes still, and body temp., drops. The brain produces a sleep spindle. It lasts for about 25 Minutes. Stage N3-It is the most vital and deepest sleep state. Eyes are motionless. Heart rate and breathing are at their slowest pace. The brain produces Delta waves- the most calming stage. Growth, repair, and tissue regeneration are initiated. Immunity is boosted at this stage. Stage 4-,(R) REM-Rapid Eye Movement- It is the stage of Dreaming, Eyes move rapidly. There is an increase in Heart and breathing rates. Brain activity is markedly increased. An important phenomenon is the Paralysis of limbs. Otherwise person may enact or walk. If this limb paralysis becomes ineffective. Night-Walking ir enacting some bizarre act may occur. BRAIN WAVES IN SLEEPING STAGES -In awakened stage low voltage, high frequency Beta waves are active. At the Drwosy stage Alpha waves are active. It is the most suggestive stage of the brain. Brains accept everything without any filter. Then comes stage 1 sleep, when the Theta wave becomes active. Stage of sleep spindles is the second stage Here mixed EEG activities are detected It is followed by SW or slow-wave sleep, stages 3-4. It is the most important part, Delta waves are predominant with tissue repair, healing, and immunity are boosted at this stage. After this comes the REM- rapid eye movement stage, characterized by low voltage and high-frequency waves.

Best Time to Sleep An old saying is “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and Wise.” But there are two types of sleepers in this world, Owls and Larks. Owls and Larks-Early risers are known as Larks, who are more active in the morning. Those who sleep later in the night and remain active past midnight are called Owls. It is because of the different Circadian Rhythm amongst them. This regulates their body temperature and makes them active and passive at different times.

Why Sleep is so Vital for Us? – 1-It stores and organizes memory. Our Day-to-day or short-term memory is converted into long-term. This occurs in the Rem cycle of sleep, while the brain is most active. But attention and learning are the least active. 2 Repairing of body tissue- During sleep, the division of various cells of the body is at its maximum. Thus it causes the repairing of tissues, which are damaged during wear and tear. 3-Toxins and wastes are cleared from the Brain-Waste product of metabolism during the day and toxins accumulated are cleared during sleep. 4-Rest to the Brain-Brain becomes minimally inactive or at its slowest during non-rem sleep. So it is sort of recharged and you feel refreshed when awake after good sleep. 5-Clearing out and replenishing vital brain chemicals. -Some of the brain chemicals, which are accumulated during the day are associated with plaque formation in the brain. It is cleared during sleep. If it is not cleared, will lead to degeneration of the brain and Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia may also issue. So you can very well realize how important is sleep.

Sleep should never be neglected, because it causes repair of the awake-time wear and tear tissues, clears the brain toxins and boosts immunity, staves us from Alzeimer-disease, and provides a refreshing day and quality time.                                                     Satish Tripathi sctri48
