Basal metabolic rate and body mass index are the parameters of health and obesity. BMR signifies the minimum amount of calories and energy needed for the body to sustain your life while at physical and mental rest. Even when you are at rest, your body systems are continuously working. Like the heart, it pumps blood to maintain circulation. The lung takes oxygen inside and exhales CO2 outside to make your blood pure and usable for the body. The kidney filters waste materials and reabsorbs the filtered blood. Neurons are continuously firing, and nerve impulses are conducting to other neurons. The liver is busy digesting and storing food through enzymes. Their metabolisms of fat, protein, and carbohydrates allow them to absorb the materials needed for energy. In BMR, all these functions require a minimal or basal amount of energy. This basic amount of energy is measured in kilojoules and calculated according to body requirements at different stages of bodily activities. Normal Values of BMR: For an adult man, 1600 calories per day are needed, and for an adult woman, 1400 calories per day. Approximately 15% +/- of these values may be taken as normal. If your metabolism is increased, you will burn more calories at rest and during activity. A high metabolism means you’ll need to take in more calories to maintain your weight. Weight Loss: The higher the BMR, the easier it is to burn unwanted calories to reduce weight. When the BMR is lower, fewer calories are burned, the rest is stored as fat, and your weight is increased.  Below is the chart by which one can calculate the basal metabolic rate. It is based on Harris Benedict’s formula.

FACTORS AFFECTING B M R

1. Age: BMR is highest in children, highest in adults, and lowest in the elderly.   2-Sex: Men’s basal metabolic rates are higher than women’s metabolisms.  3-Type of body: There are three types of bodies. Thinner: ectomorphic; moderate: mesomorphic; and bulky: endomorphic. – Having the highest BMR because they must maintain larger organs and fluid volume.   4: Muscular body: Muscular tissue requires more energy to maintain than fat, so it has a higher BMR. 5:Genetic preference: Some families have higher BMR than others because of their genetic configuration.                                                  6:Physical activity: Exercise raises the BMR, and muscular activity burns more calories.   7:Hormonal factors. –Hypothyroidism raises BMR, while hyperthyroidism lowers it.  8:Environmental factors.  Hot or cold weather increases the BMR.   Make a plan for your calorie intake based on your goals: maintaining, increasing, or decreasing weight (obesity).

(BMI) Parameters: A: BMI of less than 18.5 means a person is underweight. B:If a BMI of between 18.5 and 24.9 is ideal.
